The Misadventures of M.A.D.S. "Live from Atlantis"
Book 2 of "The Professor Trilogy" - Chapter 2 excerpt
"A Monster of a Fish"

Suddenly Mike's line started to whine. They both jumped out of their seats and ran to the rod. Mike grabbed a hold of it, and started to fight the fish, or whatever it was.
"I got one Aaron!" he proclaimed. "I think I gotta shark!"
"How do you know?" he asked.
"Because it's huge and I can't stop it right now," he said as he struggled with the fish.
Mike's line continued to disappear from the reel, and fast.
"Hold on Mike, don't lose it," Aaron shouted.
Mike huffed. "I'm trying, but at this rate, I'm gonna run out of line."
Suddenly the line stopped.
"Ah man, the line must of broke," he said.
Mike began to reel in the slack. The line slowly started to tighten up.
"Hey, I think there's something still on here," he said. "It feels like a big clump of seaweed."
Mike struggled to reel in his line, even though whatever was on the other end didn't fight back. Then his line took off running again.
"It's back and taking line again Aaron," he said. "I guess it was just tired."
Then the line stopped once again.
"Ah man, what's it doing? This is driving me crazy."
Then the line took off and then stopped. It took off again and then stopped again. Mike was getting frustrated.
"Do you think it's a shark Mike?" asked Aaron.

-----------------------------------------------------------

"I don't know," he replied. "It's not acting like a shark. Whatever it is, it's making me mad."
Mike started to reel in the line again. This time the fish didn't fight back. He continued to reel, but it was still hard work.
"Man, this is tough," he grunted. "It's still on there, but it's not doing anything."
"Maybe it's dead," suggested Aaron.
"I don't know," he said. "But we should be able to see it in a minute."
Mike kept reeling and reeling until finally something came to the surface.
"Hey, there it is Mike," shouted Aaron as he pointed to something floating in the water not far from the Scorpium.
"What is it?"
"It looks like a bunch of seaweed," he said. "Maybe the fish is caught up in it or something. I'll see if I can reel it closer to the side."
The closer Mike brought it to the Scorpium, the more of it came to the surface.
"I don't know Mike," Aaron said with a worried voice. "It looks really big. Maybe you should stop reeling it in."
"Yeah, I think you're right," he replied. "Maybe I better cut the line. Aaron, get me a knife."
Aaron stood there frozen, starring at the creature.
"Aaron, get me a knife," he repeated.
Suddenly a large arm rose from the water. It was a tentacle from a giant octopus. They both screamed.
"PROFESSOR... HELP!" they shouted.
The noise awoke the Professor down stairs. He jumped up and awoke the other two.
"Sheldon, Dacota wake up," he said. "Something is going on up top with Mike and Aaron."

-----------------------------------------------------------

The three raced up the stairs to find Mike and Aaron screaming at something over the side. The Professor ran to see what it was.
"Holy cow!" he exclaimed. "That is the largest octopus I have ever seen. It's at least twenty feet long!"
"An octopus! Where?" asked Sheldon.
Sheldon and Dacota both looked over the side to see large tentacles flailing through the air. They both screamed in terror.
"What do you want me to do Professor?" Mike yelled as he held on to the rod.
"Cut the line Mike, cut the line," he yelled back.
Then the octopus let out a loud squeal. Everyone had to cover their ears.
"What's it doing Professor?" Mike asked.
"I don't know, maybe it's hurt," he replied.
But that's not what it was doing. It was squealing for a different reason. Off in the distance something else came racing towards the Scorpium. It was much bigger than the octopus on the other end of Mike's rod.
"Look, another octopus is headed this way!" Aaron shouted.
"The mommy. And she looks mad," muttered the Professor as he tried to figure out what to do.
"Just throw the rod over the side Mike!" he wailed. "We have got to get out of here!"
But it was too late. The mother octopus had arrived. She was as big as the Scorpium itself, and her tentacles could easily reach over the side. The first one came crashing over, hitting Mike right on top of the head.
"I've been hit!" he yelled as his legs wobbled and he fell to the floor.

-----------------------------------------------------------

More tentacles came over the top. They were everywhere, crashing down on everything in site. Aaron grabbed two large fish and started swinging at the octopus.
"Come on long arms," he shouted as he waved his fish in the air. "I ain't afraid of you."
"Everyone get in your seats and buckle up. I need to close the shield and get us out of here," shouted the Professor. "Dacota, do you know where the shield lever is?"
"Yeah," he replied.
"Ok, go to the front and kneel down by the lever," he said. "When I give you the word, pull it. The rest of you, in your seats."
Everyone jumped in their seats and buckled up. Well almost, just before Sheldon could snap his belt, a tentacle reached over and slapped him on the head. One of the tentacles' suctions grabbed a hold of him and lifted him out of his seat.
"AAHH, HELP, MIKEY HELP ME!" he yelled at the top of his lungs as he was slung through the air.
Mike and Aaron quickly unbuckled and grabbed a hold of the tentacle that had Sheldon. Now all three of them were being tossed around the sky.
"Help Professor!" they shouted.
The Professor started to throw everything he could at the octopus. Then the octopus rolled over and he could see the eye.
"The eye, that's it. I need to hit the eye."
The Professor looked around and grabbed one of the fishing rods. He figured he could use it like a spear and get the octopus to let go.
"Dacota, you ready?" he said.
"Yeah," Dacota replied.
"Well here goes nothing."

-----------------------------------------------------------

The Professor slung the rod as hard as he could, striking the octopus directly in the eye. The octopus let out a loud squeal and released its grip on Sheldon. Mike and Aaron then let go and all three went crashing to the floor.
"Now Dacota!" shouted the Professor.
Dacota pulled the lever and the shield began to close and the floor began to lower. Everyone ran to their seats and buckled in.
"Good job Dacota," stated the Professor. "Is everyone ok?"
Everyone nodded their heads as they gasped for air.
"Yeah, let's get out of here," Aaron said.
The Professor grabbed the controls and took the Scorpium for a dive. The octopus had let go, but was now coming back. This time she was really mad.
"Go Professor, go!" Dacota shouted.
"I'm trying Dacota," he replied.
Suddenly the Scorpium came to a halt, jerking everyone in their seats. The octopus had grabbed the Scorpium and wasn't letting go this time.
"What can we do Professor?" Mike asked. "How can we stop it?"
"I don't know," he replied.
The Scorpium began to spin.
"Aahh, what's happening?" Aaron screamed.
"The death spin!" shouted Dacota. "Like an alligator does."
"I think I'm going to be sick," remarked Mike.
"Me too," added Sheldon.
The Scorpium was spinning faster. Everyone was screaming and holding on to their seats.
"The Pteranadon, Professor," stated Aaron. "Remember the Pteranadon? You crossed some wires to give it a shock. Maybe that will work here also."

-----------------------------------------------------------

"That's right," he replied. " I'll give it a try."
It was going to be harder this time because the Scorpium was spinning fast. The Professor closed his eyes and felt under the console. He found what he was looking for, but couldn't see which ones to cross. He would just have to do it until it worked.
"Ok, here it goes."
"Hurry up," yelled Mike as everyone else just screamed.
He touched the first two wires together, but nothing happened. The Professor tried again, and again nothing hap-pened. "Well this is the last one. They say third times a charm."
"Or three's a crowd," Mike added.
The Professor crossed the wires and the Scorpium hummed. It sent an electrical charge to the octopus, shocking it enough to release its death grip. The Scorpium stopped spinning and the octopus darted off into the deep. Dacota was clinging to his chair. His mouth hanging open and his head bobbing around like a cork on a lake. Mike had one hand over his mouth and the other hand over his stomach. Aaron and Sheldon were still crouched down in their chairs with their eyes closed.
"Is it over?" asked Sheldon. "Did we stop spinning?"
The Professor took a deep breath and answered him.
"Yeah, it's over. The octopus is gone. I think we can relax now. Is everyone ok?"
Everyone sat up and nodded their heads.
"Man, I'm never fishing for sharks again," Mike said.
"Yeah, way to go Mike," Aaron snarled as he jumped up and punched him in the arm. "That was some shark."
"Hey, it wasn't my fault," he replied as he punched Aaron back. "How was I to know I would catch a giant octopus?"

-----------------------------------------------------------

"You can't be happy with a regular fish, nooo...it has to be the biggest, the baddest fish out there," Aaron stated, punching Mike in the arm with every adjective. "You had to hook into something that tried to eat the whole ship!"
Mike jumped out of his seat screaming and attacked Aaron.
"It's not my fault, it's not my fault," he repeated as he punched on Aaron.
Dacota and Sheldon jumped in trying to get them to stop.
"Alright you two, that's enough," demanded the Professor as he grabbed both of them off the floor. "Now, it was no ones fault, and everything is ok, no one got hurt. So I want you two to apologize to each other right now."
Mike and Aaron stared at each other with mean looks on their faces, huffing and puffing.
Mike reluctantly went first.
"Alright...uh...I'm sorry Aaron," he said. "But it still wasn't my fault."
"I know...and...I'm sorry too," Aaron replied.
Aaron bowed his head and mumbled something under his breath.
"Your still fat," he said.
"What?" Mike asked.
"He said your still fat," answered Dacota.
"Dacota!" shouted the Professor.
"You're stupid," he replied.
"Ugly!" Aaron remarked.
"Moron!" Mike snapped back.
"Accident that's waiting to happen!" barked Aaron.
"Accident that's already happened!" Mike shouted right in his face.
"Mike...Aaron," interrupted Sheldon.
They both abruptly turned to him and answered.

-----------------------------------------------------------

"WHAT?" they shouted. "Never mind," he said with a sarcastic giggle. "Gotcha!"
"Ha, Sheldon gotcha!" laughed Dacota.
Mike and Aaron both looked at each other and started to laugh.
"Funny Sheldon," Mike said. "I'll remember that."
"Ok, now that you two are done fighting, let's get cleaned up and get back on course," said the Professor.
"Yeah Mike, you stink," remarked Aaron.
"So do you," he replied back.
"You all stink," shouted the Professor. "Now go get cleaned up!"
The four boys headed to the bathroom, while the Professor walked to the controls to check their location and the vitals on the Scorpium.
"I'm first."
"No, I am."
"Hey, youngest first."
"Give me that!"
"Watch it!"
Thud, crash!
"DACOTA!!!!"
